Community Outreach

Mission HandsFUMC cares. Our members are involved in ministry to the community in a variety of ways. We frequently express our faith through volunteer activities and through working with other community organizations. Our church hosts community groups on a regular basis.

The FUMC Assistance Program is a ministry that makes a difference in many lives. It is a unique outreach to those in the Mattoon community with special needs and financial challenges. Our program expended over $9,000 last year in aid for food, rent, utilities, medical care, and emergencies. We work through counseling and assistance to restore faith and rebuild lives, not just to “band-aid” emergencies.

Counseling Services At FUMC
Counseling for a wide variety of services are offered at the First United Methodist Church.  Tammie Young is the Lay Associate Counselor for the church.  She has a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and 20 years of Counseling experience.  Counseling consultation is free and on going counseling is on an affordable sliding fee scale.  Counseling is confidential, client centered and Biblically based.  We offer individual, marital and family counseling as well as group counseling as needed.  We often have an EIU intern working with Tammie.  ScoutsThese interns are in the last phases of earning their degree and are often able to provide a wide range of services for our program as well.  Most of the interns serving in our program have a strong interest in pursuing a career in Christian counseling.  Office hours are varied, but primarily on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.  Please call the church office for an appointment.  Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.

We are pleased to sponsor Boy Scout troop #57 which meets at 6:30 on Monday evenings (usually at the church). This active group of scouts expends many hours of community service, and has a good time doing it.  Other scout groups also call us "home".
